DNS Remote Profiling is a technique which employs Internet forensic technologies and other DNS querying mechanisms to find current and historical domain DNS information. A hacker may use DNS Profiling to increase the attack surface, identify neglected and forgotten subdomains that are more likely to be vulnerable.

Moreover, subdomains which point to cloud services like Amazon or Google may be cancelled but their DNS records remain pointing to the service. An attacker might gain control of said subdomain if it were to get the same IP address from the cloud provider.

Solution

Periodically check the Onlayer Domain Profiler and make sure you are aware of all listed subdomains. Apply the latest patches to each, close services that aren’t used and delete DNS records of the referring services.
